Every year, DIY Magazine’s expert tastemakers curate a list of the country’s most exciting new bands and musicians. Past inductees have included Everything Everything and Wolf Alice, but this year’s Class of 2018 features one of our very own – BIMM Manchester trailblazers Pale Waves, who are on the cover of the current issue and are headlining the DIY Class of 2018 tour.
This year’s BIMM sponsored launch party took place at The Borderline in London. It’s the second year we have co-hosted, and it was a huge success!
The sold-out show saw performances from four outstanding acts, including BIMM Brighton’s Youth Sector, who opened the evening with a rousing performance, before handing over to King Nun and the tremendous Our Girl, who are fronted by none other than BIMM alumna Soph Nathan. Headlining was Goat Girl and DIY’s Class of 2016 inductees The Big Moon, who finished the night off with an epic DJ set.
Elsewhere, the evening also provided six very passionate BIMM Journalism and Event Management students with the fantastic opportunity to work at and cover the event. The group worked backstage to ensure everything ran smoothly. Present on the night was Prentiss Mitchell, a second-year BIMM Brighton Music Journalism student, who said:
“We’ve already been introduced to two writers at DIY who showed us around, we have been able to meet all the bands and get to experience what an actual industry event is like. The magic word at BIMM is networking, and you get to meet great people at events like this. There have been a lot of opportunities thrown our way at BIMM and we learn a lot of skills including PR, video-editing, podcasting, interviewing, writing for a magazine… It’s a real-world experience.”
Sam Seaton, another second-year BIMM Brighton Music Journalism student, was also hand-picked to represent BIMM at the launch and even got the chance to interview some of the evening’s bands. He told BIMM:
“We came to interview Goat Girl for our BIMM Music Journalism course. It’s great meeting people and getting practice. I would love to be writing for a magazine [when I leave BIMM], I just love journalism. I got into it because I love music. It was a good way for me to express how I felt about bands, artists and music.”
For our Music Journalism students, the evening also provided a chance to interview DIY’s Publisher, Rupert Vereker. Opening up about DIY’s ethos and BIMM’s involvement, he said:
“DIY is a media discovery brand for a new generation where you have to do it yourself. The investment in young artists has diminished rapidly as streaming revenues have come on, so what we’re doing is building an artist infrastructure to help young people from right at the beginning, the education stage, so that’s why we work with colleges like BIMM.”
He added: “I think our relationship with BIMM is mutually advantageous. For the second year running, BIMM has supported us to enable us to put on things like this and help us make the transition from being an advertising-led magazine and website to a complete multi-platform music discovery channel.”
At BIMM we ensure that our students receive valuable opportunities to engage with all aspects of the music industry, which is why they often leave us with such impressive CVs – not just from a degree point-of-view, but in terms of industry-led work experience, too. As Felicia Simeo – a BA2 Event Management student – says, “apply for as many opportunities as possible and grab everything you can.”
