English Language Requirements

BIMM Institute requires that your English Language capability is of a level that will enable you to succeed on your chosen course of study.

All applicants are required to demonstrate their ability to understand and express themselves in both written and spoken English. We have therefore English language requirements based on the following minimum standards.

For each of the following single and joint honours undergraduate courses, applicants require an approved English language qualification with an overall score of B2 on CEFR scale. English language qualifications accepted by BIMM Institute and the specified grades are presented in the table following the course list below:

For our single honours and joint honours undergraduate courses, we accept the following  English Language exams:

We may be able to accept IELST Indicators taken from 1st July 2020 onwards 

No less than 5.5 in each element: Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing Min. 6.0 overall
TOEFL (iBT)

We do not accept TOEFL ITP tests available in China

17 in Listening, 18 in Reading, 20 in Speaking and 17 in Writing Min. 80 overall
Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) No less than 42 in each element -CEFR B2 Min. 50 overall
Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) 165 in each component 170 overall
Cambridge Advanced Certificate in English (CAE) 165 in each component 170 overall

 

Some certificates are valid for 2 years from the date they were issued. If your certificate does not have expiry terms, please note that Admissions Teams will apply discretion to determine whether the new test is required, depending on your circumstances.

The following English Language Tests will be accepted exceptionally as evidence of an applicant’s English language proficiency, due to Covid-19 closures of English Language Centres. Please contact [email protected] prior to booking your test: 

  • TOEFL IBT Special Home Edition
  • LanguageCert International ESOL (B2 Communicator Level) Online
  • Academic IELTS Indicators taken from 1st of July 2020

We can accept Secondary School qualifications from the following countries, should the applicant have completed a qualification listed at a required level, as per the table below:

Australia English Grade C on the Year 10 Certificate/ Junior Secondary Studies Certificate/ English VHA, HA or SA on the Year 10 Certificate/ SACE English Pass/ English Credit,Higher Pass or Pass on the School Certificate (TCE)/ English Pass in Unit 3 or 4 on the VCE/ WACE – Pass in English on the Certificate of Lower Secondary Studies (CLSS).
Austria Award of Reifeprufung /Matura awarded from a Allgemeinbildende Hohere Schule with a minimum grade of 2/ Gut on the English component to meet English Language requirements.
Botswana General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE) Grades 3-6 (credit); Grade C
Canada Ontario Secondary School Diploma – English Grade C (75%) or above.
Denmark Award of Studentereksamen – English language grade 7 on the STX, HF, HHX or HTX to meet English Language requirements.
France We can accept English at 12 for those who have studied Option Internationale Anglais on the Baccalaureat General.
Hong Kong HKDSE English (Core) Level  5 overall (no less than Level 4 in any sub-section)
Iceland Award of Stúdentspróf (Matriculation Certificate) – grade of 9 in the English component.
Malawi Malawi Certificate of School Education (MCSE) – Grades 3 and 4 (credit); Grade C
Malaysia Malaysian SPM English (1119 / O level paper only) – Grade C or above
The Netherlands Award of VWO after six years of study – 8.0 in English Language.
Norway Award of Vitnemal fra den Videregaende Skoleas – grade of 4 in the English component.
Singapore Cambridge O level English grade C (1-6)
South Africa South African National Senior Certificate/South African Matriculation Certificate  – English: Grade 4/ Grade C
Sweden Avgangsbetyg/Slutbetyg fran gymnasieskolan – A grade C/VG will need to be obtained on the English C/7 component
Uganda Uganda National Examinations Board Certificate of Education (UCE)  – Grades 3-6 (credit); Grade C
USA HSD – C in Grade 12 English.
Zimbabwe General Certificate of Education O level – English: Grade C (1-6) or above;
Canada Grade 11 Secondary School English language grade at C or an equivalent.

For each of the following Postgraduate courses, applicants require approved English language qualification with an overall score of Higher B2 on the CEFR scale. English language qualifications accepted by BIMM Institute and the specified grades are presented in the table following the course list below:

  • MA Learning & Teaching in the Creative Industries

If you required a Student Route Visa to study in the UK, Full-time Postgraduate course options are available only.

FE Applicants who require a Visa under the Student route will require to submit a Secure English Language Test  (SELT) to meet the English language requirements as part of their visa application.

Please ensure you complete one of the following English tests:

  • IELTS for UKVI with an overall score of 6.0 and a minimum of 5.5 in each band
  • LanguageCert International ESOL SELT B2 (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) with a Pass overall and a minimum score of 25 on each skill
  • Pearson PTE Academic UKVI with a score of 50 overall, including at least 42 in all four skills
