Luvia - Kiss

Track of the Week

Monday is here, and after our slight hiatus last week, we’re back with a brand new Track of the Week for your listening pleasure!

Luvia has had quite a few highlights this summer. She played at Glastonbury and also had a few shows over in the USA – so we’re excited to see where her talent takes her next! Take a listen to her latest release ‘Kiss’ and discover the story behind the track below.

What was your inspiration when you began writing the track?
It’s quite a romantic song, so I think initially I was inspired by the idea of first love and the timid-at-first yet all or nothing side of it. Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet was the main inspiration overall, the ultra cinematic scenes in the movie were really compelling to me and I tried to translate it as much as possible into the song by using lyrics like ‘hand touch mine’ to reference the ‘holy palmers kiss’ part of the script.

Are there any artists that inspire you when writing?
Kate Bush and Joni Mitchell for sure! I love how they use imagery to draw you into the story and use their vocal range to accentuate the emotion. I love how Kate Bush in particular uses production to create this atmospheric scene in your head too – I’m on a mission to do something of the same vein in one of my new songs, but we shall see !

What is key to your sound and how do you make your music stand out?
I always try to include orchestral elements like Timpani drums and strings in the production. The more cinematic the better. I love anything that makes the listener start day dreaming; I like it to be a sort of escape.

How does your songwriting process work?
At random 😅 No, I tend to think of a scene in my head – either something that I’ve thought of or something that’s jumped out in a movie or a book. I find this is much more inspiring than sitting down with the guitar and hoping for the best. I find it’s more exciting just letting the imagination go crazy.

Describe your sound in 3 words…
Cinematic dream pop.

How has studying at BIMM helped you develop as an artist?
So so much! I hadn’t given much thought to an image or even songwriting or singing technique properly before I got to BIMM, and I think being surrounded by ideas and other people and opportunities just drove me out of my shell and got me really excited and fascinated to just run with it; to be the most extreme version of myself.

What’s next for you?
Lots more writing and production and perfecting my sound and image. Also, some really really exciting things which I can’t announce yet but I’m super hyped 😊 I just got back from a few shows in Vegas, so more along the line of that; tours and performance but Idk, onwards and upwards. Haha!
