Kai Smith studied a BA (Hons) in Professional Musicianship – Guitar at BIMM Brighton and graduated in 2010. Since then, he has forged a career as a prolific session musician, performing with the likes of Dua Lipa, Zara Larson, MØ, Charlie XCX, Example, Slaves and P Money.
His live touring schedules have taken him all over the world with headline appearances at arenas, stadiums and festivals, as well TV appearances such as Saturday Night Live, Later… with Jools Holland, Radio 1 Live Lounge, Jimmy Kimmel and the Ellen DeGeneres show.
Here he is performing on guitar for a special Radio 1 live Lounge alongside some of the aforementioned artists.
When he’s not touring, Kai keeps himself busy with a mixture of studio session work (guitar/keys/piano/bass/vocal/MD) and writing/production work with the likes of JME, Wretch 32, Avelino, Olivia O’Brien, StarRo, Marteen, Donae’o, The Heavytrackerz, Ditryphonics, The Flexican, Jewelz & Sparks, Fred V & Grafix.
As if that wasn’t enough, Kai also produces music for contracted Youtube videos, including recent work with session drummer Matt McGuire, who secured a gig as live touring drummer for The Chainsmokers off of the back of his drum cover of their hit single ‘Closer’.
Kai has also contributed to Masterclasses at BIMM, demonstrating that despite all his success, he still remembers where he came from.
We wish him continued success with his session career and look forward to hearing who he performs with next.
