Wretch 32 drops in to BIMM London to inspire the next generation of young artists

2 May, 2025

Award-winning rapper, author, and creative director Wretch 32 made an exciting appearance at BIMM London, speaking to a packed-out room about success, creativity and mental resilience in the music industry.

From making chart-topping singles to his role as Creative Director at 0207 Def Jam, Wretch’s journey spans decades of innovation in UK music. But, as he reminded students, there’s no clear roadmap to success in today’s landscape.

“It’s survival of the genius,” he said. “It’s not just about making great music anymore. It’s about how you present it, how you promote it, how you connect.”

He emphasised how platforms like TikTok have made the industry more accessible but also more saturated, meaning artists must work harder than ever to cut through the noise. Gone are the days when crafting a strong body of work was enough; now, artists must devote equal energy to their campaigns and marketing as they do to their music.

But strategy alone isn’t enough. Wretch spoke passionately about the mindset and inner drive that fuel his work, and how staying grounded in purpose helps him navigate the highs and lows of the industry.

“If a lyric can shift someone’s mood, that’s success. I’m trying to beat my own chart position every time – but more than that, I’m trying to grow, to evolve.”

Mental wellbeing and resilience were key themes throughout the session. Wretch encouraged students to stay connected to what they love, not just commercially but personally. For him, success isn’t defined by streams or sales – it’s measured by connection, by the impact a lyric can have on someone’s day.

He also championed the power of collaboration. Working with artists like Labrinth, he learned to find melodies by mimicking instruments – an approach that sparked new levels of creativity.

“Great things happen when people come together,” he said. “Collaboration leads to growth, to experimentation, to sparks you didn’t see coming.”

Throughout the masterclass, students gained exclusive insights into Wretch’s creative principles, from songwriting structure to the mindset that keeps him curious and passionate after more than 15 years in the industry.

“Love what you do,” he told them. “Write with sentiment, with a story in mind. Obsession and curiosity will keep you going further than talent alone.”

The session also reflected Wretch’s deep commitment to inclusivity. He spoke openly about the barriers faced by Black British artists, and how those with experience have a duty to lift others up and share knowledge.

“Not everyone starts from the same place,” he said. “If you’ve made it through the door, you should be holding it open for the next person.”

From advice on gaining respect in the industry to reflections on the realities of being Black and British in music, Wretch offered a masterclass that was equal parts inspiring and unflinchingly real.

For students at BIMM London, the event was a rare and valuable opportunity to learn from an artist whose impact extends far beyond the microphone.

After the Masterclass, we sat down with Wretch 32 to talk about his collaboration with the Black Music Coalition on a scholarship designed to support the next generation of Black talent in the music industry. The Black Music Coalition x Wretch 32 Scholarship covers full tuition fees for three years for students from Black backgrounds studying Music Business, Event Management, or Music Marketing, Media and Communication at BIMM Institute London. Applications close on Friday 30 May 2025.
