Steve Banks

Guitar Lecturer

Steve is a graduate of The Guitar Institute and Leeds College of Music with BA (Hons) Jazz Studies, and has studied with internationally renowned guitarists including the UK’s Mike Walker and Wayne Krantz in New York. He’s worked as a session musician, band leader and solo artist, playing and performing with top musicians around the UK and abroad. 

Steve was a featured guitarist on the 2011 Colman Brothers’ release, reaching Top 10 in the iTunes UK Jazz chart, alongside live performances including the Manchester Jazz Festival. He played guitars and features as composer on celebrated UK Jazz vocalist Sara Colman’s 2018 album ‘What We’re Made Of’.

Performances with the Sara Colman Band have included Birmingham Symphony Hall, CBSO Centre, Kings Place and Jazzahead! in Germany. Steve has also performed and recorded with bands including Greg Cordez Quintet and We Are Leif. He’s performed in the Tony Smith Band playing to sold out audiences at venues including Pizza Express Jazz Club Soho and The Poole Lighthouse Theatre. In 2018, he performed as part of a full production of Quincy Jones’ ‘Soulful Messiah’ alongside Black Voices and Birmingham Town Hall Gospel Choir.

Steve is the editor of – an online guitar tuition site led by guitarist Mike Walker. He is an inspiring teacher with extensive experience in individual and class tuition, having designed and taught the guitar course on the BA (Hons) Popular Music Performance at Southampton Solent University for seven years, and as resident guitar tutor on the LMFL International Jazz Summer School.
