James Bay returns to BIMM Brighton for an inspiring masterclass

BRIT Award-winning singer-songwriter and former BIMM Brighton student James Bay made an exciting return to BIMM Brighton, delivering an inspiring and insightful masterclass to students eager to follow in his footsteps.

 

The ‘Hold Back the River’ star stepped back into BIMM Brighton’s top-floor live room where he once honed his craft to share his experiences from his incredible journey – from a student with big dreams to an internationally acclaimed artist.

Reflecting on his time at BIMM, Bay spoke passionately about the impact of industry masterclasses on his own career:

“I loved my time at BIMM – the masterclasses were brilliant for picking up tips and hearing stories from people actually working in the music industry… Being at BIMM really helped me get to where I am now, and I’m chuffed to chat with the students here and share whatever I can to help them get a sense of what this job’s really like and how to keep going in it.”

During the session, Bay gave students an exclusive glimpse into the realities of the music business, offering advice on songwriting, resilience, and navigating the highs and lows of an artist’s career. With a Grammy nomination, multiple BRIT Awards, and Ivor Novello recognition, he had plenty of valuable insights to share.

The event, also featured live demonstrations and an interactive Q&A, allowing students to engage directly with one of the institution’s biggest success stories.

For students in attendance, the experience was both interesting and motivating. Songwriting student Jess shared her excitement about the session:

“It was so inspiring to hear James Bay speak, especially knowing that he once stood on this stage as a student. Having the opportunity to hear his journey and insights through the university was amazing. It’s a reminder of what’s possible for all of us.”

Martin Wright, Campus Dean at BIMM Brighton, expressed his pride in welcoming Bay back:
