BIMM Manchester students power Unconvention 2025
BIMM Manchester students played a central role in this year’s Unconvention, as the grassroots music conference returned to Band on the Wall for two days of panels, performances, and industry-led discussion.
Unconvention was almost entirely staffed by BIMM students and alumni, who volunteered in a wide range of roles and gained crucial experience in delivering live events. Run by Music Business Principal Lecturer Jeff Thompson and Course Leader Michael Hosker, the event gives students direct access to the conversations shaping the future of the music industry.
Panel discussions explored the state of the UK music industry, including the influence of politics and policy on live music, and the responsibility of artists, fans, and organisations to hold decision-makers accountable, with contributions from speakers including Scott Cohen, members of the Music Venue Trust, and artist TTSSFU.
They also highlighted the continued importance of the independent sector, which represents 45% of the global music market, and its role in building sustainable, artist-centred careers.
There was also space for discussions around how the industry is changing, with speakers addressing shifts in touring routes, evolving audience habits, and the pressures facing festivals across the UK and Europe.
Mental health was a key theme throughout the event, with particular emphasis on the difficulties faced by emerging artists working at a grassroots level. Panellists spoke openly about the financial and emotional strain of touring, the fear of speaking publicly about mental health, and the need for better support structures that allow artists to prioritise wellbeing without risking their careers.
The evenings at Unconvention showcased performances from emerging talent such as YAANG, Freak Slug, Porij, and SHOCKA.
With its strong student involvement and focus on real industry challenges, Unconvention continues to be an important event for BIMM Manchester, offering incredible experience and networking opportunities.
Providing real-world, hands-on experiences is at the heart of the BIMM experience. Our longstanding partnerships within the industry both inform what we offer and facilitate countless opportunities every year. Check out the opportunities we offer students.
