BIMM Bristol host career sessions with Adam Devonshire of IDLES

22 October, 2024

BIMM Music Institute Bristol recently hosted exclusive career sessions for students alongside Adam Devonshire, the incredibly talented bass player of British punk band IDLES. The band also includes Bristol lecturer Lee Kiernan as the guitarist and graduate Jon Beavis as the drummer.

The sessions focused on the logistics of touring and planning, providing essential tips for both solo artists and bands navigating the music industry.

Students participating in these career sessions gained invaluable insights into the reality of life on the road, from managing logistics to maximising creative potential during tours.

Adam Devonshire, or Dev as he’s affectionately known, has been a key player in shaping IDLES’ electrifying sound since he joined the band. With their raw energy and socially conscious lyrics, IDLES have swiftly emerged as a formidable voice in modern punk music. Dev’s unique playing style, marked by gritty basslines and a strong rhythmic presence, underpins the band’s tracks. His dynamic approach balances aggression and melody, amplifying IDLES’ powerful, politically charged messages.

These sessions provide an incredible opportunity for BIMM students to learn from someone with plenty of first-hand experience navigating the music industry as a successful artist. We’re confident that this experience has inspired our students to pursue their own musical journeys with the same passion and authenticity that define IDLES’ sound.

BIMM Bristol Vocals student Madi Micallef commented:

“The time that I got to spend with Dev was very insightful and fun. He was extremely down to earth and gave us some great advice on being in a band, and also about the professional music world in general. I’m extremely grateful for the experience!”
