Paul Archibald

Lecturer - Masters in Popular Music Practice *

Paul teaches Popular Music Practice at BIMM Music Institute Bristol as part of the Postgraduate programme. He balances a busy schedule as a performing musician with academic interests, completing his PhD in Music at The University of Edinburgh early in 2018. His research interests include popular music studies, jazz studies, festival studies, historically informed performance Studies, and organology, and he has recently presented at conferences in Montreal (Society of American Music), Tomar (Associação Nacional de Instrumentos Musicais), and Amsterdam (Rhythm Changes).

Paul plays in many projects, both based in and outside Bristol. His role as drummer with Newcastle group 'Rob Heron & the Tea Pad Orchestra' has seen him play many UK festivals (such as Glastonbury, Bestival, Wilderness, BoomTown), and featured on BBC Radio 2, 3 & 4.

Although playing regularly within the roots scene in the UK, Paul's experimental project 'Free Nelson Mandoomjazz' is currently signed to Rare Noise Records, and has recently performed at OctLoft festival in China, and JazzFest Berlin, where he was billed alongside jazz legend Benny Golson.
