Music Journalism Lecturer

Neil Kulkarni is Course Leader of Music Journalism at BIMM Music Institute BirminghamHe started writing professionally in 1993 and has been writing about music, film and politics ever since for a host of magazine and newspaper titles both in the UK and internationally.

After spending the nineties writing regularly in both staff and freelance positions for Melody Maker, Uncut,  Vox & Loaded, plus underground magazines such as Lime Lizard and Knowledge, Neil went fully freelance in 2000, specializing in hip hop and metal writing for Spin, Metal Hammer, Kerrang!, Terrorizer, DJ Magazine, The Source, The Guardian and a host of others. He combined his freelance writing with substantial DJing work both in clubs and in broadcast media, and has for over 20 years interviewed and worked with some of the biggest names in hip hop and metal music including Metallica, Slipknot, Dr. Dre, Ozzy Osbourne, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, and innumerable others. He has worked across the range of digital and audio/visual media as well as liasing with and creating promotional materials for  major and indie record labels around the world.

Neil is currently hip hop editor for DJ Magazine and writes regularly for Wire Magazine, Crack Magazine and the Quietus website as well as maintaining his at-times contentious F.U.N.K blog. He is the author of 'Hip Hop: Bring The Noise' (Carlton Books), 'Eastern Spring: A 2nd Gen Memoir' (Zero Books) and 'The Periodic Table Of Hip Hop' (Penguin Books). He is currently working on a book for Repeater Books about race and British music due for publication in 2018. His kids are constantly telling him to turn his music down.
