Student Led Record Label to Release BIMM Album

12 June, 2018

Being featured on the BIMM album has been a rite of passage for many of our performance students over the years. The annual compilation features some of the best songwriters, bands and producers from each of our campuses, and has long been a launchpad for many graduate’s performance and recording careers.

Each campus has creative control of its own album, with songwriting lecturers and the wider creative faculty voting for only the strongest demo submissions each year, before they are professionally re-recorded and released on vinyl, CD and various digital platforms including Spotify and Soundcloud.

This time around however, one of our campuses will be doing things a little differently. 2018 will see the best of BIMM Bristol’s performers releasing their tracks as a series of singles – All implemented by their own student-run record label, HUBB Records.

HUBB will be giving each artist their own uniquely tailored single release, in accordance with what suits them best. The artists will then release the singles on their own platforms via AWAL (with HUBB’s assistance) throughout late July and August, with a different single every few days, allowing each act to benefit from publicity generated by the label’s social media and PR channels. Finally, around two months after the single release, the tracks will form an official compilation and Spotify playlist as a full BIMM album.

Summing up the initiative, Music Production student Elliott Tottle, acting as A&R spokesman for HUBB Records, had this to say:

“As a label, we’re aiming to give each artist as much attention as possible with their unique release strategies. These artists were selected from a pool of around 70 submissions, so already their quality and potential has had to show, and this has continued in the recording sessions we’ve had so far. Every artist has shown quality and efficiency in what could be deemed a high-pressure situation, they’ve been brilliant and we at HUBB records are keenly awaiting the results of everyone’s efforts, it’s looking very good indeed.”

He continued. “Finally, we’re hoping that these singles become a platform for the artists to get seen by the right people to continue their rise and that us members of the record label are able to form long-term professional relationships with each of the artists for future work and releases.”

One of the first acts to record their track were alternative indie quartet ‘Sinclair’ (pictured), we spoke to lead vocalist Olivia about their recent recording session at the renowned Rockfield studios, which has seen the likes of Black Sabbath, Kasabian, Queen and Coldplay walk through its doors.

“For us, it was always a goal to eventually record something at Rockfield.” She explained. “So, to be given the opportunity to do that was so surreal. We are so grateful for that!”

We look forward to hearing the results from Sinclair’s session, along with each of this year’s acts, as well as seeing what else is in store for with HUBB Records’ future releases.
