Self Esteem joins us at BIMM Institute Manchester’s new state-of-the-art studio
BIMM Institute Manchester has opened its brand new state-of-the-art recording studios at Merchant Exchange. The studio is fully kitted out with an SSL mixing desk along with NEVE, SSL and API outboard, custom live and control room, as well as three Apple Mac labs and individual recording spaces for mixing, writing and tracking instruments.
At BIMM, creativity is key, so we wanted to ensure the technology was matched with versatility. Every room in Merchant Exchange has been made to our bespoke requirements and was developed from the ground up by our partners, The Studio People, who also helped us create our new BIMM Bristol studio. The multiple room studio is linked using our SSL desk and can be controlled in the main studio, creating the perfect environment to record isolated vocals and instruments to perfection.
Self Esteem
Rebecca Lucy Taylor, who currently operates under the moniker Self Esteem, visited the studio allowing BIMM Institute students to experience an actual session and put the facilities through its paces. Rebecca shared her expertise with our lucky production and performance students while they recorded a version of her incredible 2021 single ‘I Do This All The Time’ together.
Rebecca started out in 2006 as one half of indie-folk duo Slow Club. Now, as Self Esteem, she is a fully-fledged take-no-prisoners pop diva.
To date, she’s released two critically acclaimed studio albums, 2019’s Compliments Please and 2021’s Prioritise Pleasure. Last year saw her album Prioritise Pleasure dominate countless critics Album of the Year lists, including the rare feat of being named both The Guardian’s Album and Song of the Year. Continuing where she left off, this year she’s already picked up a nomination for Best New Artist at the upcoming 2022 Brit Awards ceremony and four nominations at this years NME Awards.
BIMM Institute Manchester’s principal Nick Donovan added: “It was a hugely successful and educational day. Rebecca was excellent and worked with our team and students so well – she’s also a genuinely kind and nice person to be around in a creative environment. She was very complimentary about the studio which was great to hear and the students got a great deal out of it.”
