Multi-Award-Winning Drummer Visits BIMM Brighton

4 December, 2015

Legendary drummer and multi-award-winning musician, Harvey Mason is the composer of some huge hits over the years for artists such as Mary J. Blige, Nancy Wilson and The Notorious B.I.G. – and a talented record producer to boot.

Harvey’s drumming skills have been heard throughout music world, on records by James Brown, Jennifer Hudson, Herbie Hancock; in his work with the London Symphony Orchestra;  performing at numerous Oscar ceremonies; and with singing legends, Barbra Streisand and Frank Sinatra.

We were extremely fortunate that one of the most in-demand session musicians in the world found the time to deliver a Masterclass in BIMM Brighton, hosted by our own Head of Drums, Pat Garvey at The Brunswick. The session was a live music fiesta with fantastic performances from Harvey accompanied by the awesomely talented Nim Sadot on bass guitar. “What a drummer – what a day!” said Nim.

As well as the exciting performances, Harvey Mason held an open Q&A session with the assembled students and staff, which prompted plenty of questions about his career and his skills.

Host Pat Garvey was thrilled with the quality of Harvey’s Masterclass session, calling it: “Professional, personable and awesome!” BA2 Songwriting student, Kat Head called it, “Fascinating and insightful – a true inspiration”, while BA2 Guitar student, Bruce Medes called it, “An amazing masterclass from a living legend.” BIMM Drum Tutor, Vinnie Lammi agreed, describing the masterclass as, “Inspirational and a joy to watch.”

Harvey himself showed his generous musical spirit throughout, and said afterwards:

“What a super learning environment – very, very, very special! I’m so happy to have shared my experiences and gained new experiences from the students and faculty.”

We’re honoured to have hosted such a world-class musician and we will continue to introduce BIMM students to high-calibre artists like Harvey to inspire and educate. Thank you Harvey!
