Brighton’s very own independently run music studio was co-founded by BIMM Brighton alumni Luke May, Meg Carnie and Sam Clines in November 2019. The three budding entrepreneurial creatives proudly provide a high-quality studio at a competitive price. They are now on a quest to increase opportunities for musicians across Sussex as well as through education.
South Lanes Studios haven’t had the easiest ride. On 1st February 2020, they opened the doors to their new studio and rehearsal space but were forced to close a month later due to COVID-19. They spent the start of Lockdown 1.0 reassessing their business model, and after re-opening in mid-June, bookings climbed through the roof.
Their Covid Discount Scheme allowed artists and bands to use their space at a discounted rate, which built their clientele back to its former glory. The team eventually reached the point where they were having to turn clients away, leading to their next mission: expansion.
Expanding their offering
They’ve found a brand new space consisting of two large rooms, which the three co-founders plan to convert into a new control suite and live room. Alongside this, they plan to keep their current space that includes a rehearsal space and a songwriting/production suite. As a high level of soundproofing is required, the group is using a Crowdfunder to raise funds and help with these building costs.
One of their main aims is to open their facilities to education systems. Having already had discussions with notable local universities in the area, the group plans to give students experience in their professions as they enter the big wide world of the music industry.
