Dr Steven Gamble is a researcher of popular music and the Head of Department for Academic Studies at BIMM Brighton. After studying at the University of Surrey and the University of Oxford, he completed his PhD, funded by the AHRC consortium TECHNE, at Kingston University London.
He predominently studies post-1990 metal, hip hop and rock music, and has spoken internationally on his research. Much of his scholarship uses analysis, hermeneutics, and cultural theory to investigate experiences of listening and fandom in everyday life. His PhD thesis focuses on upon empowerment in post-millenial rap and metal music listening.
Alongside his academic research, Steve is active as a drummer, producer, and composer. He has undertaken commissioned soundtrack work for the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science and the British Institute of Post-human Studies.
