Cool but never aloof, a much-loved – if reluctant – icon, Sonic Youth’s main man Mr Thurston Moore joined us in Berlin for the third of his BIMM Masterclasses, following his well-received sessions in London last year and Dublin last month.

Students and staff at Berlin were thrilled to be able to hang with a true American guitar icon, one that has straddled both the underground and mainstream and has remained steadfastly in love with music and refreshingly un-cynical: “Music comes from the magic of being alive!” was just one of many inspiring lines from Thurston’s Masterclass.

Our Berlin Education and Curriculum Manager, Nick Donovan was the happy host of the Masterclass which took place at Warschauer Straße. Thurston drew on his enormous catalogue of musical and personal life experiences, from his move to New York as a teenager to join the punk rock scene, to the solo material he writes and records today.

Mark Clayden, College Manager at Berlin, told us:

“It was one of the most informative, up close and personal BIMM Masterclasses that I have attended. Thurston talked about the music that influenced him to become a musician, through to the dedication, passion and integrity that has made him one of the most influential performers of our time.”

Berlin student Christoph Reichardt felt at ease and inspired after seeing Thurston in person:

“My impression about Thurston is that he is a really casual and easy-going guy. He was really open and willing to share his life in music with us.”

We always aim to bring talented people in to meet our students, to let them know the possibilities that are out there waiting for them. As Christoph told us:

“It’s so nice to see the university I am studying at is getting in such great artists, managers and experienced people from the music industry. This is really positive and helps BIMM Berlin get better known by the right people. We as students can experience and learn a lot from that.”
