In 2020, we’ll have our very first Graduating Class from BIMM Birmingham!
It’s been exciting watching this cohort grow and develop, and hearing all the incredible music from one of our newest colleges! We’re loving the debut release from Rhianna Keane. Listen now to ‘Fool’ and find out more about the track below.
What was your inspiration when you began writing the track?
I like to write in the minds of people close to me. I’m a very observant person, so assessing a situation and writing down what I notice is what inspires my songs.
Are there any artists that inspire you when writing?
There are so many! I listen to a lot of lo-fi beats and jazz trip-hop. There are so many melodies and lots of inspiration to get from a vibey beat. In terms of artists, I love Lana Del Rey for lyrical inspiration. Her lyrics are so abstract and send you into a fantasy fairytale. More include, Jordan Rakei, WILLOW and musical genius’ such as Yussef Dayes.
What is key to your sound and how do you make your music stand out?
The key to my sound is to ensure that it is timeless music and will never go out of fashion. Trends come and go, so for me it’s about finding the middle line and doing something different. I want my music to be feel-good music, sending people into a different world when listening.
How does your songwriting process work?
This is something that’s constantly changing. More recently my process has been about writing small spoken word pieces/poems. I’ll be walking or on the train and I’ll write about people around me, what’s going on in the world or how I’m feeling. Then I’ll find a beat or play a basic chord progression and then I seem to find inspiration and form a structure.
Describe your sound in 3 words…
Fresh, vibey and soulful.
How has studying at BIMM helped you develop as an artist?
In so many ways. I have discovered myself as an artist and began to find my sound. This is down to all the talented people you meet that are completely on your wavelength.
