This will brighten up your Monday morning!

The awesome BIMM Brighton alumni band Orchards dropped their latest single last week, and it’s a banger! Also, with their debut album coming out on 13th March, we are so excited for what 2020 brings for these guys!

What was your inspiration when you began writing the track?

I think this was one of the easiest on the debut album to write. I’d come up with the simple chorus line ‘It’s clear you’ve been Sincerely Overwhelmed’ from a conversation with my therapist and Sam had brought this hooky intro riff ‘da da da, da da da’ (when you hear the song that will make sense). It sort of just flowed from there really. We write best with a couple of short ideas brought to practice and then just 3 hours of making noise in a practise room.

Are there any artists that inspire you when writing?

With this track I, personally, had Hippo Campus in mind. We had a played with them in London a few months previous to writing this song. The way his melodies just flow effortlessly. I wanted to use that inspiration to create a new kind of melody for Orchards. I think it worked. This song represents this album so well. It’s a total middle ground between everything we’ve written for it.

What is key to your sound and how do you make your music stand out?

We don’t try to think too much about that if I’m honest. We just write what we feel like writing. We all have such vastly different music tastes, but because it’s so broad we overlap with certain bands; Everything Everything, Paramore, Foals, Bloc Party, 2000s Indie. So, when we write, we just write whatever we feel like that day. That melting pot just so happens to sound like what we do. I think it’s the most organic way of writing and that angle makes it far more honest. That’s what people want in music, honesty.

How does your songwriting process work?

Like I say. It’s just us four in a room bouncing off of one idea. Whatever comes out, comes out. We are all very critical of ourselves but we try so hard to be the ‘5th person in the band’ and be objective. We try our very best to create something we love but also something that works.

Describe your sound in 3 words…

2000s Indie, now.

How has studying at BIMM helped you develop as an artist?

It allowed us all to meet. I think for us that’s the most important bit. You get out of any experience the same energy you put in, and BIMM allowed us to hone our crafts, learn who we are as people and form this band. Which now for us, is our future and our career. It takes hard work and determination but if you are dedicated to music, beautiful things can happen.

What’s next for you?

OUR DEBUT ALBUM COMES OUT MARCH 13TH! This has been such a long time coming and we are so incredibly proud of what we have created, it’s just torture not being able to show you all right this second.
