It’s time for our final Track of the Week of 2019!
BIMM Brighton Songwriting student Izzie Derry shares her Christmas song ‘In A Year’ – listen now and discover more about the track below.
What was your inspiration when you began writing the track?
I wrote the song last Christmas, when I was reflecting on my year as many people do when a new year is approaching. I was a bit frustrated that I hadn’t achieved all I had hoped to, but then realised that I’d actually done quite a lot and grown a great deal as a person.
Are there any artists that inspire you when writing?
I would say the artists that inspire me most are: Ray Lamontagne, Martha Wainwright and Laura Marling, I just love the honesty in their lyrics.
What is key to your sound and how do you make your music stand out?
I’m quite reflective as a person and that’s definitely a theme that is consistent in my songs. So, I guess the music I write is pretty genuine and normally has a positive message, which hopefully makes my music stand out.
How does your songwriting process work?
I usually come up with some lyrics or a melody and will then just start messing around on my guitar until I’ve written a song.
Describe your sound in 3 words…
Positive Folky goodness.
How has studying at BIMM helped you develop as an artist?
I would say the people that I have met and learned from has helped me develop a great deal.
What’s next for you?
I’ve got a few singles on the way in the new year, and an EP too, as well as plenty of gigs.
