It’s Monday, and we’ve got a brand new Track of the Week!

BIMM Berlin Songwriter Esther Eden dropped her latest single ‘Help’ last week – listen now, and discover a bit more about where the track below.

What was your inspiration when you began writing the track?
Many people play “games” in relationships or before they even get into one. For instance, when someone shows interest, the significant other pulls away and vice versa. Instead of just being honest about your feelings in fear of scaring the other person away, some people tend to wait or maybe just like the attention. I experienced this situation and that’s when I wrote “Help”. It was terrifying yet exhilarating, hence the “rollercoaster” metaphor.

Are there any artists that inspire you when writing
My style is inspired by my mother who used to be a jazz singer. I started to sing because of the + album by Ed Sheeran. I was discovered by Jessie J who believed in me and inspired me to continue songwriting. When I write songs, it’s a form of expression for me inspired by my life experiences.

What is key to your sound and how do you make your music stand out?
For me, it’s to make sure my vocals stand out. Of course, the music I’ve listened to whilst growing up influences the way I want my songs to sound, but I don’t have one particular genre that I strive for which I think helps my music stand out too. I’ve listened to so many different kinds of music that I like to incorporate different sounds into my songs.

How does your songwriting process work?
Generally, I need to have something I want to write about. So usually after an experience and I want to express the emotions I’m feeling. I start by jamming on the guitar, writing lyrics and singing melodies all together, all at once.

In terms of the creative process for this track specifically, while recording the song we actually ran into two hiccups. The tempo in the studio was slower than we thought because of some preset we weren’t aware of at the time. I think the tempo is one of the most important elements on a track and the set tempo can really affect the way a song is perceived. Also, I got quite sick just before the recording session and could not really hear myself the way I would normally. So I insisted on rerecording the song with the correct tempo and when I perform the song to the best of my capabilities.

Describe your sound in 3 words…
Electronic Jazzy Pop

How has studying at BIMM helped you develop as an artist?
Being able to learn my craft and practise it everyday helps me improve my art. Also, being in a university with likeminded and talented people that I can learn from helps me grow as an artist. I think collaborating with many BIMM students, such as August Ingram and Sacha Arnaud for ‘Help’, assisted me in learning different artistic traits.

What’s next for you?
The music video comes out soon after. Then, the whole EP – ‘MY OWN WAY’.
