Hello Monday! If you’re looking for some new music to kick start the week, take a listen to our Track of the Week from BIMM Birmingham’s Cole Stock!

What was your inspiration behind this track?

At the time I wrote this I was listening to a lot of indie bop songs such as The wombats and Two Door Cinema Club. I wanted a song I could open a live set with that gradually built into a big chorus.

Are there any artists that inspire you when writing?

When I’m writing for myself I tend to listen to a lot of guitar driven music such as Oasis, Circa Waves and McFly. The energy in the drums and guitar riffs just make me so happy!

What is the key to your sound and how do you make your music stand out?

Happy guitar melodies. I love writing hooks and melodies and when I write a chorus I try to make it is as big as possible, something I would sing back to a band at a festival.

How does your songwriting process work?

I’m always looking for inspiration wherever I am! I remember being on a plane last month singing a hook I had just came up with into my phone, and the guy next to me looked at me super weirdly. But when inspiration comes you have to get hold of it and record it!

Whether I’m writing for myself or for set briefs, I will always take 20 minutes to listen to music within the same genre before I start, this sets me up for a writing day. After this I will pick up a guitar, a keyboard or jump on the drums and just play until I find a melody, a rhythm or maybe a lyric. After this I will build the song using Logic Pro X and see where it goes!

Describe your sound in 3 words…

Catchy guitar pop.

How has studying at BIMM helped you develop as an artist?

Throughout my time at BIMM I have learnt so much about artist development through the help of industry professionals. The importance of consistent content, constant writing and releasing is key to succeeding as an artist or songwriter. Through the songwriting classes, I’ve learnt how to become a better songwriter but  I’ve learnt how to market myself as an artist throughout my other modules.

What’s next for you?

I have a few gigs coming up these next couple of a months. BIMM Birmingham’s Live & Lyrical show on Wednesday 15th January, and I am playing the Hare and Hounds on the 17th February!

My next single will be out at the start of march called ‘Close Your Eyes’ followed by an acoustic version. Then I’m off to Rena in Norway to attend the Out Of The Woods Songwriting Camp. Here we will be writing songs for the next Eurovision which I’m extremely excited about!
