From The Beatles to Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, Hamburg has held a special place in British music for nearly 60 years. But what makes the beautiful German city so spectacular is its stellar line-up of club venues and reputation for championing new and emerging talent. That’s where BIMM comes in.

After months of anticipation, it gives us great pleasure to announce that 2018 will see the opening of our brand new BIMM Hamburg college in the cosmopolitan St. Pauli district, where John, Paul, George and Ringo first arrived nearly six decades earlier.

BIMM Hamburg will offer industry-led degree and diploma courses – all taught in English – to inspire a new generation of artists and music professionals throughout Germany and beyond. These will include a full three-year BA (Hons) in Professional Musicianship – Guitar, Bass, Drums, Songwriting, Vocals – Music Business and Production, along with a one-year intensive Certificate in Guitar, Bass, Drums, Songwriting, Vocals, Production and Music Business.

Hamburg – notably St. Pauli – is an international destination for music fans, with a  brilliant reputation for nightlife. The ultra-chic Molotow club in the Reeperbahn [Hamburg’s entertainment strip] has previously played host to huge bands like The Killers and The White Stripes. Equally as historical is the famed Gruenspan, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary next year.

The city is also home to the famed Reeperbahn Festival (Germany’s most prominent inner-city music event), which has played host to our BIMM Showcase for the past four years. Incidentally, the Reeperbahn Festival was where we first announced our plans to open BIMM Hamburg. On top of this, Hamburg is the epicentre of the German music industry, which means our students will always be at the heart of the action.

Of course, the friendly rivalry between Berlin and Hamburg to become Germany’s premier music city still wages on, with both continually innovating. Fortunately, BIMM has a presence in both cities, which paves the way for future transfers, exchange programmes, shared industry-standard facilities and joint masterclasses. We are genuinely passionate about Germany and believe Hamburg, with its high standard of living, coastal location and excellent travel links to Berlin is the perfect student city.

Vaseema Hamilton, our Business Development & Creative Careers Director, who is leading the Hamburg project said: “We’re thrilled to have found a home right in the heart of the city, which we know our students will love. It’s a great destination with fantastic connections to the rest of Hamburg and the rest of Germany.

“Having worked with our friends and colleagues in Berlin, we realised that there are so many connections and creative links between Berlin and Hamburg in the current music industry. Then there is, of course, the incredible relationship between British Music and the Hamburg scene – going right back to the Beatles.

“Hamburg is a wealthy and thriving city of international renown with a long and popular music heritage linked to the UK. The current music, creative and media industries in the city are incredibly robust and successful and will offer many opportunities to our BIMM students and future alumni to start a professional music career there and to gain experience while studying.”

After receiving an overwhelming amount of support, we are pleased to announce BIMM has formed several initial partnerships with local institutions. These include Karostar – a partially state-funded building situated next to the iconic Media Bunker, which will house BIMM’s 100sq metre office space and the Nochtspeicher Club – a young and vibrant club venue that will host lessons, workshops, auditions and End of Term gigs.

We’ll also be working closely with the acclaimed Clouds Hill Studio, which will provide music production equipment and additional teaching space. As for our staff, we have reached out to a number of high-profile tutors, music professionals, record labels and booking agents from around the local area who will join our extensive roster of industry insiders at BIMM Hamburg.
