AMAZING FIRST TERM EVENTS AT BIMM HAMBURG

BIMM Institute Hamburg opened its doors to students in September and has wasted no time in connecting students directly to the global music industry! From Freshers evenings to fascinating Masterclasses and the college’s very first end-of-term gig, BIMM Institute Hamburg has had its fair share of exciting happenings recently. Here are just some of the fantastic events BIMM Hamburg students have taken part in during their first term at the thriving German campus.

HAMBURG HARBOUR CRUISE – THURSDAY 26TH SEPTEMBER

After a busy day of official enrolment, students took a trip across the port of Hamburg on a traditional German ‘barkasse’ boat. Attendees had the opportunity to meet their fellow students while bonding with lecturers and staff members over a drink.

REEPERBAHN FESTIVAL ’19

As part of this year’s Reeperbahn Festival, BIMM Berlin’s EVVOL, Ed Prosek, MIN t and The Flavians (all of which include either our students, alumni or tutors), joined incredible names like Mighty Oaks and Bausa at the international festival based in Hamburg.
This was a very special year for BIMM as the festival also celebrated the official opening of BIMM Hamburg. And, many of the college’s new students came along to celebrate and enjoy the festival.

WELCOME TO BIMM HAMBURG – SEPTEMBER

BIMM Institute Hamburg officially kicked things off at club Kukuun with a welcome by College Principal Dr Nick Donovan and live music from BIMM Berlin bands Me & the Monster and The Flavians. There was a session with special guest drummer Gary Powell from The Libertines which saw him interviewed by BIMM Hamburg Songwriting and Performance lecturer Rick McPhail from legendary Hamburger Schule band Tocotronic. The evening provided longer sets from both BIMM bands, as well as a party with DJs Benny and Rick at Hafenklang nightclub by the harbour.

NEFFEX MASTERCLASS – OCTOBER

The very first Masterclass took place with Los Angeles duo NEFFEX. The musicians spectacularly dropped 100 copyright-free songs in 100 weeks on social media, encouraging the YouTube community to use them royalty free in their content videos. Their plan was an instant success, gaining them over two million subscribers in a little over two years. Bryce Savage and Cameron Wales explained their progressive concept to BIMM Hamburg students and also took part in a student Q&A session.

LARS LEWERENZ MASTERCLASS – OCTOBER

Lars Lewerenz is the Founder and General Manager of Audiolith Records – a Hamburg independent record label which specialises in electronic and indie music and, in particular, electropunk. During the Masterclass Lars explained Audiolith’s company philosophy to students, detailed ways for record labels to stay interesting and discussed a range of important tools which can be used to promote yourself as an artist.

ULI BÖHNER MASTERCLASS – NOVEMBER

Event manager Uli Böhner is a veteran of Hamburg’s music industry. As an award-winning stage manager, project manager and tour manager he has booked live events for many acts at Hamburg record label Buback. The practical Masterclass explained the important skills needed to be an effective tour manager, such as how to calculate event figures, getting to the bottom of tour accounting, plus many other preparations required for a successful live event.

STEFAN STRÜVER MASTERCLASS – NOVEMBER

Stefan Strüver is the General Manager of Germany’s biggest indie distributor PIAS and has discovered and promoted bands and artists including Milky Chance, Trümmer, Agnes Obel and Gisbert zu Knyphausen. During the Masterclass Stefan explained to students exactly how PIAS works, detailed the types of collaborations he believes are best for artists and labels in today’s industry, and gave some valuable hints outlining how students might go about convincing him to sign them.

HANNAH VASANTH MASTERCLASS – NOVEMBER

Hannah Vasanth is a well-known live and session musician who performs under the name Hannah V. She has collaborated with artists including Rhianna, Lady Gaga, Jessie J, Jason Derulo, Jay Sean, Taio Cruz and Lalah Hathaway. In the Masterclass Hannah explained her career steps as a creative songwriter, before undertaking a songwriting workshop with students which outlined how to save good ideas quickly.

CAROL VON RAUTENKRANZ MASTERCLASS – NOVEMBER

Carol von Rautenkranz is a German record label operator, businessman and former musician considered to be one of the pioneers of the iconic Hamburger Schule movement. From 1989 to 2007 he ran one of the most influential German indie labels in L’Age D’Or, which released bands including Die Sterne, Metric, The Gossip and Tocotronic. Today he runs Hamburg’s Golden Gate Management – one of the most important management agencies in Germany for producers, songwriters, remixers and sound engineers. During the Masterclass he discussed his career, the development of L’Age D’Or and finished with a Q&A session where he explained the skills he considers to be important for succeeding in the music industry.
